Colts’ Jonathan Taylor makes NFL history vs. Titans while strengthening case for Offensive Player of the Year

Jonathan Taylor is a major reason for the Indianapolis Colts’ success. Taylor’s 80-yard touchdown ran gave the Colts (6-1, at the time) a 24-7 advantage early in the third period. Taylor’s 80-yard touchdown run matched the Hall of Fame runningback Earl Campbell in the history of rushing touchdowns for a player who played in 75 games. Taylor’s historic score came against Campbell’s previous team. The Oilers were renamed to the Tennessee Titans shortly after moving from Houston. Taylor and Campbell both ran for 63 touchdowns in their first 75 matches.
Campbell’s legendary career included being named NFL’s MVP. Taylor’s current campaign has been MVP worthy, but that award is unlikely to be given him. A non-quarterback was the last person to win league MVP in 2012. That honor went to former running back Adrian Peterson, who nearly broke Eric Dickerson’s single-season record.

Taylor, who may not be able to reach the league MVP award, has made a stronger case for winning Offensive Players of the Year. Taylor entered the game on Sunday as the NFL leader in rushing yardage (697) and touchdown runs (10). He was also a major factor in the Colts’ best NFL record. Taylor had 149 rushing yards and two touchdowns in just 10 carries after his 80-yard scoring spree. Taylor, who was the league’s rushing champ in 2021 is on the verge of reclaiming the unofficial title of the best player for his position. Colts Coach Shane Steichen believes that Taylor has already achieved this.

Steichen said recently that Taylor was the best running back in the league at the moment. “There’s absolutely no doubt.”
